Friends for the Non-Religious

Remember last month when I was bemoaning my limited options for meeting new friends in this post?

Well, like 11 days later, this billboard was put up right here in the Bible Belt Buckle by a group called Secular Life. How awesome is that?

It seems to have infuriated some of the local kooks (see HERE), but I, for one, am excited that such a community exists and happy that they decided to advertise. I am intrigued, to say the least, and definitely intend to take a closer look at this group.

Ha! The UUA (Unitarian Universalists Association) uses this kind of advertising often... ;) We've had similar kickback. UUism is comprised of atheists, agnostics, and people who are quasi-spiritual. ;) Of course, though, we're more of a traditional church like format...

Anyway... people are really sensitive when their religion is questioned, I guess. The sign seems to intimidate THEM... maybe they arent so secure in their beliefs.

Off-topic: MarsGirl, have you stopped blogging? The last blog post I get is from before Halloween. Just wondered if maybe something got screwed up in the permissions process and I'm not able to access recent posts. Then again, maybe you're just taking a break...?

Yeah, some of the negative responses to the billborad are just crazy. And the billboard is so incredibly innocuous, it's funny.

They're not saying god is dead or there is no religion, it's basically just an advertisement so that other non-religious people are aware that a social community of friendship exists for them.

i think it's nice. why do some peopel get so irate when others disagree with them? what do they care what others believe, or don't believe, anyway? Surely they must have more important things to occupy their time with.

Cathryn... I actually moved my blog... and removed all the entries about work so that they dont refind me... and I never go to the address while I'm at work. This blog does not require you to log in. I personally dont care if work refinds the blog and reads my widow stuff... they will also notice that I do not blog during hte day anymore, so they have nothing more to bitch about.

The address is:

PS... feel free to change the link to my blog on your "Blogs I Read" area, too. It's not like I'm going out of my way to not be found (by "work" people). I set the blog to be searchable through search engines... cuz I want random people finding me and reading...

MG - Oh wow, I have a lot to catch up on! :) But I did change your URL in my blog list. Like the new look!

Seattle needs the opposite of this billboard. It's totally taboo here to admit you're part of a faith community. In an opposite sort of way, I understand how you feel, Cathryn!
